A Little History On The Rum Severin

The rum Séverin is an agricultural rum from Guadeloupe, produced by the distillery Séverin, founded in 1928 by Henri Marsolle, located in the town of Sainte-Rose in the north Basse-Terre

At the beginning of its history, the agricultural domain was called Habitation Bellevue. That’s when round the 1800s Mr. Severin made his acquisition. In 1920, Madame Beauvarlet (an aunt of the Marsolle family) bought the estate, which had become a pineapple canning factory for a few years, with the help of  Viscount Novion de Tourcoing. Madame Beauvarlet calls the help of one of her nephews which is Henri Marsolle, who leaves the family distillery of La Lise in Bouillante to rehabilitate the Domaine’s distillery and relaunch the rum production.

In 1928, Henri Marsolle acquired the Domaine de Séverin distillery and developed different types of production. Later, he is helped by two of his sons, Joseph and Edward. Unfortunately, Edward returned to the premises to rescue a deaf and dumb worker who had heard nothing of the explosion of the boiler and died tragically in 1964 as a result of his burns. In 1966, Joseph Marsolle took over the distillery gradually passing the torch to two of his three sons, José and Thierry.

The distillery of Domaine de Séverin, which is part of a “sucrose house”, formerly consisting of a sugar mill, the main house, huts of workers, fields of sugar cane and gardens, is the distillery the most visited of Guadeloupe, because of its integration within an attractive tourist site. Until 2008, it was the last distillery to use a paddle wheel, fed by the water of the mountain, to operate the grinding mills.

Since July 2014, 65% of the Séverin distillery has been sold to an investor outside the founding family, who no longer plays any role in the distillery.

The rum Séverin is produced in the north of Basse-Terre, in the commune of Sainte-Rose, in Guadeloupe. The sugar canes crushed by the distillery, come from planters in the region and are cut exclusively by hand.

Sainte-Rose has always been an important area for growing sugar cane. An archival document dating back to 1764 records 35 sugar mills operated by the many canals and rivers in the area.

The water used in the composition of the Rum Severin comes directly from the mountain … pure and fresh.
