The Botanical Garden of Deshaies is located on a property of 7 hectares, having belonged to the humorist Coluche. He had bought the property in 1979.
It is to the previous owner, Guy Blandin that we owe some species of rare plants present in the botanical park. Unfortunately, a large part of these plants disappeared after hurricane Hugo in 1989.
Michel Gaillard, a nursery gardener, friend of Coluche, creator of the profession of “interior landscaper” in Paris, and initiator of the union of the same name, had implanted in Guadeloupe a nursery of palm production to supply his Parisian company.
It was on June 19, 1985 that Coluche asked Michel Gaillard to look after and maintain his property in exchange for land use to create his nursery. Unfortunately, a year later Coluche will die.
Thanks to his knowledge of the property, Michel Gaillard will buy it on October 1, 1991. And undertake the enormous challenge of turning it into a botanical garden.
After years of study and economic uncertainty, the real decision to create the park was made in 1998, it was a real obstacle course in financial and administrative to get all the permissions.
The practical realization of this 5-hectare leisure and floral park was carried out in 14 months, with the participation of 40 employees, all from the commune of Deshaies, and trained “on the job” as and when progress of the site. The work was done under the direction of Michel GAILLARD, designer, Didier Rousselle, landscape architect, Richard ROUTHIER, and Daniel PUGET.
Today, the park has more than thirty permanent employees, mostly Deshaisiens. The goal seems to be reached. The attendance of tourists and Guadeloupe residents is significant, (more than 120,000 visitors / year) they appreciate the wealth of plants presented, their development, the quality of entertainment, and maintenance of the site. Our “Golden Book” transmits their satisfactions and their thanks.
